St. Lucie Mets News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - William Lugo broke a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth by smoking a leadoff triple and scoring on a wild pitch to lift the St. Lucie Mets to a 1-0 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Lugo, the Mets shortstop, laced a A.J. Candelario fastball 108 mph off the bat to the left-center field gap and never broke stride as he safely slid into third base. One pitch later Candelario spiked a pitch to the backstop allowing Lugo to speed home for the game's only run.
Grant Hartwig pitched a perfect 2.1 innings to finish the game. Hartwig retired all seven batters he faced, including striking out Jorge Caballero to strand the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
Mets starter Nick Zwack pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, scattering just two hits. He walked one and struck out six.
Levi David chipped in with 1.2 hitless innings with three strikeouts.
The Hammerheads only had two hits and none after one out in the second inning.
Lugo went 3 for 4 and fell a home run short of the cycle.
Alex Ramirez went 1 for 5 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games to start the season.
The Mets snapped a two-game losing skid.
The Mets (8-4) and Hammerheads (6-6) meet again on Friday. First pitch at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is 6:30 p.m.
