St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets cruised to another high-scoring victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals with a 9-4 win at First Data Field on Wednesday.
Like they did on Tuesday, the Mets scored their runs in the early going. Through the first three innings they plated all nine runs on 12 hits and were helped out by three Palm Beach errors.
Jeremy Vasquez, who was a late addition to the lineup, went 4 for 5 with a double and three RBI.
Wagner Lagrange went 3 for 4 with three runs scored for the second consecutive game.
Jacob Zanon had his second straight two-hit game and Manny Rodriguez also had two hits.
Mets starting pitcher Tylor Megill brushed off a two-out, two-run double by Nick Plummer in the second inning and dominated the rest of his outing. He retired 10 of the next 11 hitters and faced the minimum over his final three innings.
Megill lasted 5.1 innings to get his first FSL win. He scattered five hits and three runs while striking out six.
Conner O'Neil pitched the final 3.2 innings to get his second save. He struck out five.
The Mets have now struck out the Cardinals 25 times in the two games. They have 95 strikeouts in their last nine games.
Plummer's two-run double in the second inning briefly put the Cardinals up 3-1. The Mets answered in the bottom of the second inning by sending 10 to the plate and scoring five runs.
Lagrange, Vasquez and Tiberi had RBI hits in the frame. Hansel Moreno produced a sac fly and a throwing error by Palm Beach pitcher Diego Cordero led to a run.
The Mets broke the game open by scoring three runs with two outs in the third inning. Jacob Zanon poked a run-scoring single and Vasquez followed with a RBI double to make it 8-3. Zanon scored on the play to increase the lead to 9-3 when outfielder Chase Pinder made a throwing error.
Cordero was banged around for 13 hits and nine runs (seven earned) in five innings. He did retire seven of the final eight hitters he faced.
The Mets are 5-0 against the Cardinals in the last 10 days.
The Mets (27-15, 59-49) and Cardinals (13-28, 48-57) complete their three-game series on Thursday. It's Dollar Night at First Data Field with $1 beer (8 oz. cans of Bud and Bud Light), $1 hot dogs, $1 soda and $1 popcorn. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
