Daytona Tortugas News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - Despite Daytona's offense picking up 10 hits, Jupiter was able to collect 15 of their own, as the Hammerheads hampered the Tortugas, 9-1, on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Things took a sour turn from the beginning, as leadoff man CF Connor Scott (1-3, R, HR, RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO) cracked an 0-2 pitch over the left-field fence in the bottom of the first. The 19-year-old's first Florida State League home run put Jupiter (20-22, 41-64) in front, 1-0.
The Hammerheads continued to tack on in the second. Following a leadoff single by SS Demetrius Sims (2-4, R, RBI, 2 SO), 3B James Nelson (2-5, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 SO) collected an RBI with a triple into the gap in left-center. Two batters later, 2B Micah Brown (3-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) whacked a run-scoring double to put Jupiter ahead, 3-0.
After Brown ripped a solo home run to left - his fifth of the year - to make it 4-0 in the fourth, Daytona (19-22, 54-52) finally got on the board in the seventh. Following singles by 3B Bryant Flete (3-4, R) and 1B Pabel Manzanero (2-4), LF Lorenzo Cedrola (2-4, RBI, SO) dunked a base-hit into right. Flete scored from second to pull the Tortugas within three, 4-1.
That was as close as the visitors would get the rest of the night, as Jupiter busted it open in the bottom of the frame.
In the home half of the seventh, the Hammerheads batted around and tallied five runs on a sacrifice fly to center by Sims, a ground-rule double from Nelson, a run-scoring single by DH Jhonny Santos (1-4, R, RBI, 2 SO), and a two-RBI knock courtesy of RF JJ Bleday (1-5, 2 RBI, 2 SO).
After losing eight-consecutive starts, RHP Jordan Holloway (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 SO) returned to form on Wednesday. The 2019 FSL Mid-Season All-Star tossed six shutout frames to garner his third win of the season.
It was an unpleasant return to the circuit for Daytona's RHP Ryan Lillie (4.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO). The 23-year-old struck out six but suffered his fifth defeat in the league this year.
Daytona will attempt to salvage the final game of the series on Thursday. RHP Aaron Fossas (0-0, 4.82 ERA) is expected to make his third start for the Tortugas. LHP Will Stewart (4-9, 5.45 ERA) - the Marlins' No. 29 prospect per Baseball America - is scheduled to take the hill for the Hammerheads.
The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:15 p.m. ET, leading up to the 6:30 p.m. ET start at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Thursday evening's contest can be heard on www.daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
Following the lengthy road trip, the Tortugas will return to The Jack to open up a three-contest set against the St. Lucie Mets, the High-A affiliate of the New York Mets, on Friday, August 2. Daytona continues its Best Dressed Friday series, as players and coaches will don special uniforms in honor of the 25th anniversary of comedy classic, "Dumb and Dumber". Those jerseys will be auctioned off online throughout the weekend. It will be another Friday Night Happy Hour presented by Kona Brewing with buy-one, get-one Kona beer products and Bud Light from 5:30 p.m. until first pitch. Finally, after the game, fans will be treated to another splendid Postgame Fireworks display.
Multi-game plans and single-game tickets are still currently available and can be purchased online at www.daytonatortugas.com, or by calling the Tortugas' Ticket Office at (386) 257-3172.
