Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

Jupiter, FL - Michael Mayers turned in his third straight quality start for the Palm Beach Cardinals, but it wasn't enough as the St. Lucie Mets took the first game of the series 5-2 on Saturday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The defeat ends the Cardinals four-game winning streak.

Mayers (2-5) allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings on the night and battled out of some tough situations. One start after striking out nine batters in Tampa, Mayers fanned seven Mets while walking two. Despite the strong outing, Mayers took the loss for Palm Beach after coming out of the game with St. Lucie on top 2-1.

The Cardinals struck first on an RBI groundout off the bat of Breyvic Valera in the third. Jesus Montero singled to shallow left field to start the inning and was standing on third after a St. Lucie error later in the frame. Valera's grounder to second base brought Montero home and gave Palm Beach a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals wouldn't score again until the bottom of the ninth. Trailing 5-1, Luke Voit led off the inning with a walk and used two wild pitches to get to third. Another groundout - this time by Alex Mejia - drove in the run to make it a 5-2 game.

Jairo Perez and Cam Maron had big nights for St. Lucie. Maron went 4-for-5 with four RBI while Perez chipped in three hits with a run and an RBI. Maron drove in a pair of runs on a double down the left-field line in the fourth inning to help the Mets take the lead 2-1.

Perez increased the St. Lucie lead to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly in the ninth and Maron's second two-run double later in the inning put the game out of reach for the Cardinals.

Gabriel Ynoa (4-2) tossed seven innings, scattered six hits, allowed one unearned run and fanned seven for the Mets to earn the victory.

Iden Nazario surrendered two hits and recorded three strikeouts over two innings of relief for the Redbirds.

The Cardinals (22-27) and Mets (30-19) will play game two of the two-game set on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. RH Nick Petree (2-1, 1.00) will start for Palm Beach against LH Steven Matz (2-2, 2.22) for St. Lucie. The game will be broadcast live on PalmBeachCardinals.com.
