MetroStars Lose to Orlando
December 22, 2018 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Mississauga MetroStars News Release
The Mississauga MetroStars fought their way back from a five-goal first quarter deficit to the hometown Orlando SeaWolves before eventually falling short by that same five-goal margin as the SeaWolves, relocated from Cedar Rapids last season, won their first MASL game of the season, 12-7, in a thrilling Saturday night spectacle at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.
The SeaWolves exploded out of the blocks with five unanswered goals from five different scorers in the first quarter. Brothers Osvaldo and Edwin Rojas each netted their first of two in that first quarter flurry. That prompted Mississauga coach Phil Ionadi to pull starting keeper Spyros Stergiotis in favour of Sebastian Zeballos and the tide would turn for the MetroStars soon after.
Mississauga would strike three times between the end of the first quarter and the start of the second to close the gap with Damion Graham netting a pair. In between those two goals, Josip Keran smashed a thundering strike from outside the yellow line for his first goal of the season.
Ex-MLS forward Luke Boden, formerly with the Orlando City Lions, scored a power play goal before the MetroStars' Josh Paredes brought the exciting 10-goal first half to a close.
The two teams traded goals early in the third quarter with MetroStars midfielder Marco Rodriguez answering Jonathan Mendoza's second of the game for Orlando. Gordy Gurson would then score a penalty shootout goal before Boden netted a second power play goal for the SeaWolves. Graham struck for his hattrick only to have Mendoza score his third goal of the game just over 30 seconds later.
Early in the fourth quarter Rodriguez finished off a nice give-and-go with Graham to net his second of the game but Osvaldo Rojas' second put the result out of reach for the visitors.
The MetroStars will take a brief Christmas break before returning to the Paramount Fine Foods Centre next Sunday, December 30, where they will host Eastern Division rivals Harrisburg Heat with kickoff set for 3:05pm (ET).
