The Mississauga MetroStars fought off a two minute penalty in sudden death overtime only to have the Baltimore Blast score the winning goal with just over five minutes gone in the extra period as the defending Major Arena Soccer League champions registered their second victory over the expansion MetroStars this season by a 6-5 score in a thrilling MASL match at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre Thursday night.
The two teams traded goals in the first quarter before the Blast scored two unanswered in the second through midfielder Josh Hughes to take a 3-1 lead at halftime. Mississauga then fought back to tie the match in the third quarter with Dwayne De Rosario scoring his second of the game and Matthew Rios netting his first of the season.
The MetroStars would take the lead early in the fourth quarter on a goal by Damion Graham, his fifth of the season, but an unfortunate own goal by Josip Keran and a brilliant solo effort by Jonatas Melo vaulted the Blast back into the lead.
But the MetroStars would equalize once more with just 2:18 left when sixth attacker Marco Rodriguez found the back of the net with a searing free kick, forcing the extra period. Jon Orlando tallied the winning goal for the Blast with 4:36 left in OT.
The MetroStars will return to action Saturday January 5 at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre, where they will host the unbeaten Milwaukee Wave with kickoff set for 3:05pm (ET).
