Mesa Stays Hot in Loss at Long Island

(Central Islip, NY): Melky Mesa went 4-for-4 and homered for the fourth time in five games but the York Revolution fell 7-2 to the Long Island Ducks on Saturday night in front of 5,633 fans at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. The Revs drop their third straight after winning each of the previous four and will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday before returning home on Tuesday to kick off a nine-game homestand at PeoplesBank Park.

The Revs opened the scoring in the third inning for a brief 2-0 lead as Mesa hammered an opposite field two-run homer to right. It was his fifth overall this season and 45th of his Revs career, tying Scott Grimes for fifth on the all-time list.

Long Island answered right away with two in its half of the third as Breland Almadova led off with a double to right and scored on Vladimir Frias' double to left-center. Steve Lombardozzi followed with an RBI single to right, tying the game at 2-2.

That was the only damage off Revs starter Austin Steinfort who limited Long Island to two runs on four hits over six strong innings, walking just two and striking out none. He retired his final seven batters and held the final 11 Ducks batters off the bases aside from an error.

York missed opportunities to go back in front, however, failing to capitalize on a bases loaded, no-out threat against Ducks starter Anderson DeLeon in the fourth as well as a pair of walks issued in the fifth, ultimately stranding 12 runners on the night.

Long Island broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out ground ball double into shallow left-center off the bat of Frias, and then scored four times in the eighth taking advantage of five walks to put the game away.

The Revs will send Jake Welch (1-2) to the mound on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. opposite Long Island righty Scott Harkin (2-0). Notes: Mesa's home run was his 26th all-time on the road, moving past Jason Aspito for fourth on the franchise's all-time chart. Mesa reached base all five times going 4-for-4, and is now 19-for-32 on an eight-game hitting streak. He is also 13-for-21 with four homers and nine RBI in the first five games of the current road trip.
