Phoenix Mercury News Release

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Mercury will make the first selection in the 2007 WNBA Draft presented by adidas, which will be held Wednesday, April 4, in Cleveland, WNBA President Donna Orender announced today.

ESPN2 will provide exclusive first round coverage of the draft beginning at 10 a.m. local time (1 p.m. EST) with continued coverage of the second and third rounds on ESPNU and NBA TV. For the second consecutive year, the annual draft will take place in the city hosting the NCAA Women's Final Four on the day following the conclusion of the tournament. Cleveland will host this year's Final Four on April 1 and 3 at Quicken Loans Arena.

The Mercury became the first team in league draft lottery history to win the top pick while having the smallest mathematical odds. Phoenix won the first overall selection on October 26, 2006, despite a 2.5 percent chance. It's the second No. 1 overall selection in team history for the Mercury, who selected 2006 league scoring leader Diana Taurasi in 2004.

This year's draft class is headed by North Carolina guard Ivory Latta and Ohio State center Jessica Davenport, as well as Duke center Allison Bales and guard Lindsey Harding. A complete breakdown of prospects by the WNBA Player Personnel Department can be found at: www.wnba.com/features/draftprospects_070124.html.

Winners of a franchise-best seven straight to finish 2006, the Phoenix Mercury look to pick up where they left off led by All-Stars Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter in the record-shattering offense of head coach Paul Westhead. Under the direction of new general manager Ann Meyers Drysdale, the Mercury open their 11th WNBA season on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. at US Airways Center against the San Antonio Silver Stars.
