
Mercury Signs Sydney Wiese

PHOENIX - The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury have signed guard Sydney Wiese, the team announced today.
Wiese, originally selected by the LA Sparks with the 11th overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft, appeared in 28 games as a rookie, averaging 2.3 points per game in 7.9 minutes of action. During her rookie season, the Oregon State product scored a career-high 22 points (6-of-10 from three-point range) in a 99-89 win against Washington on May 19. Weise spent four seasons with the Sparks (2017-20), averaging 3.9 points, 1.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, while shooting 39.5 percent from three-point range. During the 2020 season, the Phoenix native averaged a career-high 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting a career best .505 from the field and .472 from three-point range, finishing fourth league-wide in three-point percentage and third in true shooting percentage (66.1). The five-year vet was traded to the Washington Mystics ahead of the 2021 WNBA season, where she averaged 4.4 points in 27 appearances and eight starts.
Wiese graduated from Oregon State as the school's all-time leader in assists (626) and fifth on the all-time scoring list (1,824). During her senior year, she averaged 15.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game and shot 42.6 percent from three-point range, leading the Beavers to a 31-5 overall record and a Pac-12 regular season championship. Weise finished her collegiate career as the Pac-12's all-time leader in three-points made (373) and one of 14 players to make the Pac-12 All-Conference team all four years of her career.
