Phoenix Mercury News Release
PHOENIX - The Phoenix Mercury has selected Penn State guard Tyra Grant (24th pick, second round) and Oklahoma guard/forward Nyeshia Stevenson (36th pick, third round) in the 2010 WNBA Draft, the club announced today.
Grant, a 5-11 guard, led the Lady Lions in scoring in 2009-10, averaging 19.1 points and 4.9 rebounds in 30 games. She received All-Big 10 First Team honors for the second consecutive season, and recently became just the fourth player in Lady Lion history to reach 2,000 career points. The Youngstown, Ohio native posted at least 20 points 40 times in her four seasons at Penn State, including 14 such performances in 2009-10. She closes out her collegiate career with averages of 16.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 121 games for Penn State.
Stevenson recently helped lead the Sooners to the Final Four of the NCAA Women's Championship tournament. She was named Most Outstanding Player of the Kansas City Regional after she hit a game-winning three-pointer in overtime against Notre Dame and scored 31 points against Kentucky to send Oklahoma to the Final Four. The Little Rock, Ark. native showed big-game ability as she averaged a team-high 19.8 points in four postseason games. The 5-10 small forward finished the 2009-10 season with averages of 13.9 points and 4.0 rebounds in 33 games.
The Phoenix Mercury has been providing affordable and entertaining basketball in the Valley for 13 seasons. The two-time WNBA Championship team will begin its title defense on May 15 at US Airways Center against the Los Angeles Sparks with tip off set for 11 a.m. Lower-level tickets are available for as little as $10 a game for the 18-game season and can be purchased on phoenixmercury.com or by calling 602-252-WNBA.
