
Mercury clinches top seed in Western Conference

The league-leading Phoenix Mercury tonight clinched the top spot in the Western Conference, guaranteeing home-court advantage against conference opponents through the playoffs. The clinching comes via the Mercury's victory over the Atlanta Dream at home paired with the Seattle Storm's loss to the Minnesota Lynx at Target Center.
Phoenix will enter the 2009 WNBA Playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the West for the second time in three seasons, and currently owns the best record in the league at 22-10 (.688). With a combination of three Mercury wins or Indiana Fever losses, Phoenix will be guaranteed the best record in the WNBA this season and will earn home-court advantage throughout the postseason.

Phoenix then returns home for the season finale against the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 12 p.m. That contest will be telecast live on ESPN2.
