Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Iowa's offense was hot, but 14 hits weren't enough to capsize Memphis. The Redbirds (13-4) seized an 8-4 victory over the I-Cubs (4-10), Saturday at Principal Park. Iowa went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left a season-high 14 stranded.
The first four batters of the game reached for Memphis and the Redbirds went on to plate four in the inning on a hit by pitch, one walk and three hits. The I-Cubs retaliated by loading the bags in the bottom of the inning, but they couldn't collect on the labor.
Memphis added a tally in the second to extend the lead to 5-0. Iowa would wait until the fifth to begin the comeback effort. Efren Navarro sparked a two-out scoring drive with his first home run of the season. Mark Zagunis walked and came in to score on a Taylor Davis double. Ryan Court punctuated the inning with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 game.
Iowa loaded the bases once again in the seventh, but cashed in this time around with a sacrifice fly from Chesny Young to pull within a run. The I-Cubs loaded the bases for the third time in the eighth and for the second time, couldn't cash in. The comeback bid was left incomplete as Memphis added three runs in the final two frames.
Eight of nine Iowa starters notched at least one hit, including pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. Making his second Triple-A start, Underwood went 5.0, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while fanning four. He took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. John Gant improved to 3-0 with the win for Memphis, while Mike Mayers grabbed the save.
The series continues tomorrow with a 1:08 first pitch against Memphis. Promotions include Pedal to the Park, Family 4 Pack, Food Pantry, Kids Run the Bases Postgame and Knothole Gang. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
