Baby Cakes Pacify Dodgers

Metairie, La. - Zac Gallen threw seven scoreless innings and combined with three relievers to pitch the New Orleans Baby Cakes past the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 2-0, Saturday night at the Shrine on Airline.

The Dodgers (12-3) lost for just the second time in the last 13 games and were shutout for the first time this season. Although they outhit the Baby Cakes, 6-5, the Dodgers were held 1-for-12 with runners on base. They entered Saturday's game batting .363 as a team with runners on.

Gallen (2-1) limited the Dodgers to four hits, with three walks and five strikeouts over a season-high seven innings. After escaping jams in the third and fourth innings, Gallen finished his night by retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced.

Over the final five innings, the Dodgers tallied three singles and didn't have a runner reach scoring position. For the game, only one Dodger advanced to third base.

The Baby Cakes (6-11) threatened more often that the Dodgers, but the OKC pitching staff held them 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 runners on base.

New Orleans loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning, but Guillermo Moscoso struck out his counterpart Gallen to end the inning. The Dodgers then also packed the sacks with two outs in their next at-bat before Alex Verdugo hit into an inning-ending forceout.

The Baby Cakes broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning. After two hits and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out, Dodgers reliever Edward Paredes walked Rafael Ortega on four pitches to score the game's first run. Chad Wallach followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 lead.

After New Orleans took the lead, the Dodgers had five at-bats with the tying run at the plate, but could never string a rally together. Jake Peter singled with two outs in the ninth inning to keep the team's hopes alive, but New Orleans reliever Jumbo Diaz entered the game and got Donovan Solano to pop out on the first pitch he threw to earn his second save of the season.

Making his first start of the year for the Dodgers, Moscoso completed four scoreless innings. He allowed three singles and three walks with five strikeouts.

Paredes (1-2) allowed both runs in the fifth inning took the loss.
