Seattle Reign FC News Release
(Seattle) - On Wednesday, June 20, Reign FC players Megan Rapinoe and Jodie Taylor were announced as nominees for ESPY Awards. The ESPYS celebrate the best in sports, with winners selected by sportswriters, broadcasters, sports executives, and athletes, along with votes from fans. Both Rapinoe and Taylor are nominated in categories new to the show this year.
Taylor is up for Best International Women's Soccer Player while Rapinoe is nominated for Best NWSL Player. Below is a list of nominees in each category, listed alphabetically.
Best NWSL Player
Adrianna Franch, Portland Thorns FC
Sam Kerr, Chicago Red Stars
Samantha Mewis, North Carolina Courage
Megan Rapinoe, Seattle Reign FC
Best International Women's Soccer Player
Pernille Harder, VfL Wolfsburg/Danish National Team
Sam Kerr, Chicago Red Stars/Australian National Team
Lieke Martens, FC Barcelona/Netherlands National Team
Jodie Taylor, Seattle Reign FC/English National Team
Both of the nominated Reign FC players spoke about the awards, and what it means to them to be recognized.
"This is the first year they've had an award for Best NWSL Player," Rapinoe said. "I think it's tremendous. Obviously, the more visibility, the more people know about us, the more the league grows."
Having grown up in England, the ESPYS are a relatively new award show for Taylor, who was thrilled by the news that she received a nomination.
"I just got told [about the nomination] straight off the pitch," Taylor said after Wednesday's training session. "I think it's pretty incredible. I'm happy to be nominated."
The 2018 ESPYs take place on July 18, 2018 at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, CA. This year's ceremony will be hosted by Danica Patrick, and broadcast live on ABC, with replays airing on ESPN.
