Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Adonis Medina struck out 12 batters to match a career high, and a pair of late runs pushed the Threshers ahead for a 2-1 win against the Bradenton Marauders on Wednesday night at Spectrum Field.
Medina has now struck out 12 batters three times in his career, and twice for the Threshers this season. Medina collected 12 strikeouts in seven innings against the Florida Fire Frogs on July 21 with Clearwater in a 2-1 victory.
Medina dealt seven innings of one run ball on Wednesday, conceding just four hits, while striking out 12 and not permitting a walk.
Down to just 17 games left in regular season play, the Threshers extended their divisional lead with the win on Wednesday night. Clearwater now sits four games ahead of the Lakeland Flying Tigers, and 4.5 ahead of the Dunedin Blue Jays atop the FSL North.
After the start was delayed 47 minutes due to rain, the game remained scoreless until the fourth, when Bradenton (15-34) (50-64) broke the scoreless tie.
Mitchell Tolman shot a leadoff double into right field and scored on a liner to left by Casey Hughston for a 1-0 Bradenton lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the eighth inning, where Clearwater surged ahead on a pair of late runs.
The Marauders threatened in the top of the inning, but were held off the board courtesy of an unconventional double play. Lucas Tancas rolled a groundball through into center to lead off the inning, and Justin Harrer reached on an errant fielder's choice in which Threshers reliever Alberto Tirado misfired on a throw to second base to move Tancas to third, putting men at the corners with no outs.
Tolman hit a ball on the ground to first baseman Luke Williams who fired it on to Arquimedes Gamboa covering at second, and Gamboa slung it to home plate to get the double play.
Clearwater seized the ballgame in the home half of the inning. Grenny Cumana drew a leadoff walk and Raul Rivas was hit by a pitch from Deivy Mendez (0-4), putting two men on for the Threshers with no outs. Jose Gomez put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the baserunners, and Williams dumped a fly ball into center field to send Cumana across the plate, knotting it up, 1-1.
Gamboa then launched a fly ball deep into left-center field, allowing Rivas to tag up at third and score to push the Threshers ahead 2-1 on the sacrifice fly.
Tirado (3-1) secured the win for the Threshers, delivering a scoreless inning of relief, and Jakob Hernandez earned his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth to close out the ballgame.
The Threshers look for the sweep as the four-game series between Clearwater and Bradenton concludes Thursday night at Spectrum field. David Parkinson (1-0) will toe the rubber for the Threshers against Pedro Vasquez (0-1) for the Marauders with the first pitch set for 7 p.m. Kirsten Karbach will be on the call for the Threshers Broadcast Network with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 p.m.
