Mississippi RiverKings News Release
PEORIA, Ill. -- One night after the Mississippi RiverKings (2-1-0) tallied their largest win in their SPHL era, the Peoria Rivermen (2-2-0) held them closer, but could not solve Dan McWhinney as the RiverKings took their second straight win of the weekend with a 2-1 win in Peoria.
After a scoreless first period, the RiverKings struck first. Leo Thomas tallied his fourth goal of the season when his shot beat Russ Stein high, blocker side to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Matt Whitehead and Todd Hosmer assisted.
But Peoria came back late in the second. Nick Wheeler's one-timer on the power play beat Dan McWhinney to tie the game at one heading into the final period of regulation.
Early in the third, the RiverKings found themselves on the power play when Garrett Vermeersch was called for slashing just 1:39 into the period. Nineteen seconds into the man-advantage, Andrew Randazzo's shot squeaked through the legs of Stein and Matt Whitehead hammered it home to put the RiverKings ahead 2-1. Peoria had a late power play opportunity with the netminder pulled, but could not capitalize as the RiverKings took their second game in a row.
Dan McWhinney (1-1-0) took the win after stopping 42 of 43 shots against. Russ Stein (1-1-0) turned away 33 of 35 shots against in the loss.
