Boise Hawks News Release
VANCOUVER, B.C. - Steve McQuail hit his league-leading ninth home run in the second inning for the lone run of the game, as three Vancouver pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, knocking off the Boise Hawks, 1-0, before 4,919 fans at Nat Bailey Stadium.
McQuail hit the first pitch he saw from Hawks starter Willengton Cruz well over the left field wall to give the C's the 1-0 lead. It was all Blake McFarland and two relievers needed, as the Vancouver hurlers limited Boise to just one base runner after the second.
Boise had a chance in the second, loading the bases with one out, but McFarland enduced an inning ending double play ball from Willson Contreras.
The loss squandered an outstanding performance by the Boise pitching staff, as Cruz went five and two-thirds, allowing just four hits and eight strikeouts, with Dustin Fitzgerald and Charles Thomas each tossing scoreless frames.
The Hawks head to Spokane for a key three-game set against the Indians, beginning tomorrow night. Ben Wells gets the call in the opener, against Spokanes David Perez at 7:35 p.m. (MT)
NOTES - McQuail has hit nine home runs this season, while the Hawks as a team have hit 10...Boise is now just 4-for-27 with the bases loaded this season and was limited to three hits in a game for the third time.
