SAN JOSE, CA. - A pair of home runs and a gem on the mound helped propel the Modesto Nuts to a 10-3 win over the San Jose Giants on Saturday night at Excite Ballpark.
Ian McKinney (W, 11-5), the California League's ERA leader, heaved seven sparkling innings to help the Nuts (54;65; 24-25) even up a three-game set with the Giants (54-64; 24-25).
McKinney surrendered two unearned runs in the third before he gave up his first hit which was a double in the fourth. The only earned run he allowed came across in the fourth on a RBI groundout. The Nuts' lefty surrendered just three hits while striking out seven and walking two.
The Nuts got the offense going early against Jose Marte (L, 3-6). David Sheaffer clubbed a second-inning RBI double as part of a three-hit day. Jake Scheiner followed that up with a three-run homer in the third inning. Scheiner finished with three hits. Connor Kopach added a solo home run in the fourth.
Marte lasted just five innings giving up five runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Nick Duron finished off the game for the Nuts with two scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
