Erie Otters News Release
Greg McKegg continued his mastery of the London Knights with a hat trick as the Erie Otters (25-21-1-1) captured a 6-4 win at John Labatt Centre Friday night.
The Otters got on the board at the 13:15 mark of the first after a good cycle by the third line. Matt Paton won the puck in the far corner of the Knights zone to Brett Appio, who then centered a pass for Mac McDonnell in the slot. McDonnell fired the shot into the top corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season.
McKegg pick up his first goal of the contest at 15:48. The captain redirected a pass from Derek Holden at the side of the crease for his 32nd goal of the season.
Shawn Szydlowski picked up his 26th of the season at 18:13 to give the Otters a three-goal advantage. The winger tooked a cross-ice feed from Anthony Luciani at the left circle and ripped a ferocious shot top shelf into the net for the tally. The Knights added a late goal courtesy of Dane Fox to trim the Otters lead to two heading into the second.
The Knights had a couple of power plays to begin the second period, but the ever-improving Otters penalty kill stymied both opportunities and Brett Appio would score after the conclusion of his penalty. Phil Varone found Appio with a perfect pass at the short side of Michael Houser to put home his seventh of the season at 10:58.
McKegg added another tally with 48 seconds remaining in the second on a terrific tic-tac-toe passing play between him, Luciani, and Mike Cazzola. McKegg finished it off by blasting the shot into the open net for his 33rd of the season.
The hat trick was completed with 6:08 gone by in the third period as McKegg knocked in a rebound through Houser to send some hats flying onto the ice, a rarity for a visitor's hat trick.
Ramis Sadikov stopped 43 of 44 London shots before exiting the game late in the third period. The Otters penalty kill continued to impress with a 4-for-4 night, and several Otters had multiple points. Cazzola collected three assists, while Luciani and Adam Pelech each had a pair of helpers. Appio also had a goal and an assist.
The Otters continue on the road to Owen Sound Saturday night to take on the Attack at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the action on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan or online at ottershockey.com (courtesy of the James H. Cross Company).
