Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors started a 3 in 3 weekend tonight against the Brampton Battalion at the Hershey Centre. The game was never in doubt as the double blue downed their rivals, 4-1. The win makes the Majors 5-0 against Brampton this season.
Mississauga got on the board first thanks to a Jordan Mayer powerplay goal. After Sam Carrick took a tripping penalty at 14:50, Mayer scored his 13th goal of the season to make it 1-0 Mississauga. Chris DeSousa and Justin Shugg had the assists on Mayer's goal at 16:40. Then DeSousa took his turn as the goal scorer at 19:06. The goal was DeSousa's first as a Major and 12th of the season. Rob Flick had the assist this time. The Majors outshot Brampton 9 to 2 in the first period.
The second period was action packed with two goals and three fights between the two teams. Alex Cord took a high sticking penalty to start the period at 1:20. The penalty led to Brampton?s first and only goal of the game when Barclay Goodrow scored his 16th of the season at 1:41. The powerplay goal was assisted by Dylan Blujus and Marcus McIvor. One thing continued to lead to another as Rob Flick and Stephon Thorne dropped the gloves off the subsequent faceoff in the first fight of the period and the game. The regional rivals continued to tussle at 5:16. This time Dylan DeMelo and Zach Bell were the combatants. Brampton then took a minor penalty at 6:08 when Ian Watters was called for cross checking. Devante Smith-Pelly would capitalize on the man advantage at 6:58, his 27th of the season, to make it 3-1 Majors. Marc Cantin and Maxim Kitsyn had the assists. Smith-Pelly?s goal was the last for either team in the period but the fighting was not over. At 7:58, Jamie Wise and Sam Carrick dropped the gloves in the third fight of the period. While it appeared as though Carrick scored the victory, he paid the price as he was given a misconduct, and shown the gate. Brampton put more pressure on the Majors in the second, outshooting Mississauga 7-6.
The Majors added one more goal in the third period and that was all they would need. Shugg scored his 26th of the season at 15:47 to make it 4-1 Mississauga and the Majors cruised on to victory. Shots on goal in the third period were 12-11 in favour of Mississauga.
JP Anderson was back between the pipes for the Majors after a brief stint with the San Jose Sharks. Anderson was solid in his return to the line up making 19 saves on 20 shots in the victory. Matej Machovsky made 23 saves on 27 shots, taking the loss for Brampton. The games three stars were Mayer (3rd), DeSousa (2nd) and Shugg (1st).
The Majors head to Peterborough tomorrow night before returning to the Hershey Centre this Sunday to face the Sarnia Sting. The team recently announced details for the fourth annual Paint the Rink Pink game. Tickets are on sale by visiting the Hershey Centre box office or ticketmaster.ca.
