St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 1, 2015) - Kevin McGowan tossed a gem as the St. Lucie Mets shut out the Clearwater Threshers 6-0 at Tradition Field on Saturday night.
McGowan allowed just four hits and one walk in seven strong innings. He struck out six batters and threw 102 pitches.
The Mets offense provided McGowan plenty of early run support. The Mets scored in each of their first four innings. They were helped out by a wild David Whitehead, who walked three batters, plunked two and threw two wild pitches.
Dominic Smith put the Mets up 1-0 in the first on an RBI ground out that brought home Yeixon Ruiz.
An RBI single by Jhoan Urena and a double play ball by Colton Plaia that brought in a run made it 3-0 in the second inning.
Victor Cruzado's RBI sac fly with the bases loaded in the third put the Mets up 4-0.
The Mets finally chased Whitehead with two outs in the fourth. Reliever Cody Forsythe came in and walked a batter and surrendered back-to-back RBI singles to Matt Oberste and Smith to make it 6-0.
That was plenty for McGowan. He struck out four in a row at one point, including the side in the third. Since allowing 14 hits and 12 earned runs at Charlotte on July 21, McGowan has given up just one run in 14 innings. The Mets are 2-0 in his last two starts.
David Roseboom tossed the final two innings in a non-save situation.
Smith went 1 for 3 with two RBI. Oberste was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two walks. Urena had the other multi hit game for the Mets.
The Mets (53-52, 18-17) and Threshers (60-47, 23-14) conclude their series at Tradition Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Mets are aiming for the series win and the season series victory.
