Clearwater Threshers News Release
Mitch Walding struck for two of the Threshers' six hits on Saturday, but Clearwater suffered a 6-0 loss at the hands of the St. Lucie Mets at Tradition Field.
The Mets (18-17) put up all six runs in the first four frames, while Kevin McGowan (6-9) held Clearwater off the board through seven innings.
St. Lucie squeezed across an unearned run against David Whitehead in the opening frame, after Yeixon Ruiz dropped a bunt single toward third and moved to second on an errant throw by Walding.
After a sacrifice bunt advanced Ruiz up to third, a walk followed by a fielder's choice forceout allowed him to score the first run for St. Lucie.
Clearwater (23-14) opened the second with back-to-back singles by Rhys Hoskins and Dylan Cozens, but McGowan managed to induce a pair of flyouts and a strikeout to end the inning.
Whitehead (7-9) would be lifted after 3.2 innings, having permitted five runs - four earned - on five hits and three walks.
Cody Forsythe entered with a man on and two outs in the fourth, with Clearwater down 4-0. After a walk to Jeff McNeil, Matt Oberste and Dominic Smith connected for back-to-back RBI singles to cap the scoring, with the Mets up 6-0.
Forsythe would not permit a baserunner the rest of the way, retiring seven straight before Alexis Rivero entered in relief.
The Threshers will look to earn a split of the four-game series on Sunday, as Victor Arano (4-9) takes the hill against Mickey Jannis (1-0) at 1 p.m.
Clearwater will be off on Monday, before returning home to open a three-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers starting on Dollar Tuesday, presented by Regions Bank, at 7 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
