Clearwater Threshers News Release
Aaron Brown launched his eighth home run of the season in the series opener, as the Threshers split a doubleheader at St. Lucie on Friday night at Tradition Field.
Clearwater (23-13) outlasted the Mets in game one, 4-3, before falling 6-2 in the nightcap.
After robbing Matt Oberste of home run with a leaping grab at the wall to end the first inning, Brown gave Clearwater the lead in the second inning of game one.
With two out and Chace Numata aboard at first, Brown pulled a two-run shot to right. Brown's eight home runs rank him second on the Threshers, three behind team-leader Andrew Pullin.
St. Lucie (17-17) pulled to within one when Phillip Evans doubled home a run against Ricardo Pinto in the bottom half, but the Threshers capitalized on a messy Mets inning to tack on some crucial insurance runs in the fourth.
After Rhys Hoskins reached on an error by third baseman Jhoan Urena, Dylan Cozens singled to right. Miller Diaz would then strike out Numata and get Brown to ground into a fielder's choice, but Mitch Walding worked a walk to load the bases.
With Derek Campbell at the plate, Diaz unleashed a wild pitch that permitted both Cozens and Brown to score, making it 4-1 Threshers.
Pinto (4-2) gave Clearwater 5.2 innings in the win, holding the Mets to two runs on three hits and two walks.
Ulises Joaquin battled heavy rain in the seventh inning, but secured the final outs to earn his 14th save. The Mets brought home a run and placed the tying run at second base with two outs, but Joaquin induced a popout off the bat of Yeixon Ruiz to end the ballgame.
Game two saw the Mets capitalize on a two-out error in the third inning to plate six unearned runs against starter Matt Imhof (5-4).
After Imhof got Evans to fly out and Colton Plaia to strike out to start the frame, Champ Stuart reached base on an error by third baseman Mitch Walding. Ruiz then drew a walk, and Jeff McNeil singled before Oberste lifted a three-run homer to right.
St. Lucie would tack on three more runs in the frame, and took an early 6-0 advantage.
Clearwater broke the shutout with a pair against Logan Taylor (6-7) in the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Willians Astudillo pulled a single to left to plate Malquin Canelo and Rhys Hoskins with the Threshers lone runs.
The series will continue on Saturday as Clearwater battles St. Lucie at 6:30 p.m. David Whitehead (7-8) is scheduled to take the hill against Kevin McGowan (5-9).
