Hickory Crawdads News Release

Hickory Crawdad CF Andrew McCutchen hit a two run fourth inning homer and threw out a runner at home plate. Crawdad RF Brad Corley smacked a two run sixth inning bomb and the ‘Dads snapped a six game Charleston RiverDog winning streak with a 5-3 victory in front of 3,805 fans at LP Frans Stadium.

The fans waited out a rain delay of one hour and twenty-three minutes at the start. Hickory starter Luis Valdez allowed a one out solo homer in the second inning to RiverDog 3B Marcos Vechionacci that gave Charleston a 1-0 lead.

The ‘Dads responded on McCutchen's two run shot in the fourth. Charleston evened the contest on SS Eduardo Nunez's solo dinger in the top of the fifth.

With the game even at two entering the sixth inning, Crawdad 2B Shelby Ford led off with an infield single. Hickory 3B Eddie Prasch followed with a single that put runners on the corners. With one out, Hickory catcher Mike McCuision hit into a fielders choice that gave the ‘Dads a 3-2 lead. Corley followed with his homer to open up a 5-2 lead.

Charleston rallied against Valdez during his final inning of work in the seventh. Vechionacci led off with a single and 2B Reegie Corona singled to put two on with no outs. A wild pitch scored Vechionacci. With one out and two on after a single by catcher Joe Muich, LF James Cooper hit a fly ball to center field that McCutchen caught, and fired home to get Corona at the plate and end the inning with Hickory still ahead 5-3.

Valdez (6-4) allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings to earn the win. Derek Antelo pitched a perfect eighth inning and Justin Vaclavik earned the save with a scoreless ninth.

Bryan Villalona (7-8) took the loss allowing five runs on six hits in six innings. Keaton Everitt pitched two run free innings out of the Charleston pen.

The two teams play at 7pm Saturday night. Hickory right hander Jared Hughes meets Charleston lefty Wilkins Arias.
