Benilde-St. Margaret's was stacked for a possible run to a state title in 2008. Several players have gone on to play Division I hockey since then, but the Knights were not able to win that championship.

Tom McCarthy was one of the top defenseman on the Benidle-St. Margaret's team that lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Edina in the state semi-finals. Marshall Everson scored the winner for the Hornets in front of the largest ever crowd to watch a Minnesota High School hockey game at that time.

The following afternoon, the Knights smoked Roseau, 5-1, to capture the third place trophy. The following season, McCarthy was playing in the United States Hockey League for the Fargo Force.

McCarthy played 53 games for Fargo during their inaugural season, scoring twice and adding five assists. He was a mainstay on the blue line as a defensive defenseman who loved to play physical hockey.

The following season, McCarthy started with Fargo again, but did not register a point in 14 games. Then, he was part of a trade that turned out to be a blockbuster.

McCarthy and Gavin Hartzog were sent to the Bismarck Bobcats of the North American Hockey League. Ryan Massa came to Fargo to complete the deal. The trade gave McCarthy more of a chance than anyone could have imagined.

In 31 contests, McCarthy helped Bismarck both offensively and defensively. He scored four times and added four assists during the regular season. In 11 playoff games, McCarthy earned three assists and helped lead the Bobcats to a Robertson Cup Championship.

On February 3, 2010, McCarthy committed to play college hockey at Merrimack College. Sam Rendle, his defenseman partner, had committed to Bemidji State University. The blue line tandem of two Division I recruits isn't all that common in the NAHL.

McCarthy is already making a home in North Andover, Mass. In two games with Merrimack, a Hockey East school, he has already picked up two assists and has a plus-minus rating of +1.

The Merrimack Warriors will take on #2 Boston College in a home-and-home series this Halloween weekend. It will be another chance for McCarthy to showcase his talents at the Division I level.
