JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Making his first start in five professional seasons, Jacksonville Suns right-hander Chris Mazza pitched a career-high five shutout innings, and second baseman Peter Mooney hit a two-run home run in a 4-2 win over the Montgomery Biscuits in front of 3,929 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Sunday afternoon.
After one of Baptist Health's stroke survivors threw a ceremonial first pitch, Mazza (1-0) started Sunday's game in place of left-hander Jarlin Garcia, who on Sunday became the first player called up from the Suns' 2016 roster to the major league Miami Marlins. Mazza allowed two hits and two walks with three strikeouts and no baserunners past second base.
After Mazza's perfect first inning, the Suns (15-22) tallied a run against Biscuits right-hander Jake Faria (0-4) in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop J.T. Riddle hit a one-out single to right field, and scored after consecutive two-out singles by first baseman Brady Shoemaker and right fielder Moises Sierra. The 1-0 lead remained until the third inning, when Shoemaker drew a one-out walk, and Mooney sent a fly ball to the right-field bleachers for his second home run of the season and a 3-0 Jacksonville lead. Faria went on to finish six innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
Montgomery (21-15) scored its first run in the sixth inning, as shortstop Juniel Querecuto tripled to right-center field and scored on a balk by right-hander Sean Donatello. Suns left-hander Raudel Lazo worked a scoreless seventh inning. Right-hander Tyler Kinley yielded a ninth-inning run while allowing two hits and two walks in two innings for his third save.
Jacksonville's final run came in the eighth inning off Biscuits right-hander Jeff Ames. Sierra doubled to left-center field and scored after consecutive singles by Mooney and third baseman Avery Romero.
