Jackson Generals News Release

Mobile, Ala. - Turnabout was fair play Sunday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium, as both the Generals and BayBears earned shutout victories in a doubleheader. Dylan Unsworth lowered his ERA to 1.08 with a complete-game shutout in the first game, but Mobile answered Jackson's 1-0 victory with a dozen hits in a 9-0 win in game two.

Jackson (22-14) picked up a half-game on Montgomery and now leads the North Division by a game. Mobile (15-21) handed the Generals their first shutout defeat of the season in game two.

Game One: Generals 2, Mobile 0

Dylan Unsworth (3-0, 1.08) stole the show in game one, firing a seven-inning complete game shutout as the Generals went on to a 2-0 win. The right-hander surrendered just two hits without walking a batter, and he tied a season-best with six strikeouts. After giving up a one out single to Evan Marzilli in the third, Unsworth retired the final 14 batters he faced in a row.

The South African got off to a great start, striking out the side in the opening inning. He retired the side in order in the second as well before Mobile put their only two runners of the game aboard in the third.

Kevin Medrano led off the third with a double and moved to third two batters later on Marzilli's single. That was as close as Mobile got to scoring, as Unsworth got the next two men to end the threat.

Jackson got all the offense it needed in the second inning. Tyler O'Neill gave Jackson its first home run in 12 games with a blast to straightaway centerfield. Zach Shank extended his on-base streak with a single later in the inning before moving to second on a wild pitch and scoring on a hit by Dan Paolini to make it 2-0.

Those were the only runs allowed by Zack Godley (1-5, 4.32), who also went the distance Sunday. He held the Generals to four hits, but Mobile couldn't score behind his strong effort on the mound.

The BayBears didn't even get the potential tying run to the plate past the third, as Marzilli was the team's last baserunner. Leon Landry made a sensational diving catch to rob Gabriel Noriega at the end of the sixth and Unsworth worked a perfect seventh to secure the win.

The shutout victory was Jackson's league-best sixth on the season. Unsworth became the second General to throw a seven-inning shutout after Ryan Yarbrough did the same against Mobile in game two of a doubleheader April 30 in Jackson.

Game Two: Mobile 9, Generals 0

Things did not go as well for the Generals in game two, as Mobile won handily by a 9-0 final. The BayBears jumped out of the gate quickly, scoring four in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third. Jackson was held without a run for the first time in 2016.

Andrew Kittredge (1-1, 5.68) got the ball in his second start of the season, but allowed six runs on as many hits while working into the second. Mobile took the lead on a two-run double by Mitch Haniger. Haniger scored on a single from Ronnie Freeman, and the Mobile catcher would come in on a Kevin Cron sacrifice fly to put the BayBears on top 4-0 early.

Kittredge was taken out after allowing the first two batters of the second to reach base, and both came in with Kyle Hunter on the mound. Mobile added three more against Hunter in the third. Kevin Medrano tripled in a pair before scoring on an RBI single from Haniger. Both Medrano and Haniger had three hits and three RBIs in the nightcap.

Jackson was held to just four hits by a trio of Mobile hurlers. The Generals loaded the bases against Charles Brewer in the third inning, but failed to get a run across. That was as close as they got to scoring, as Seth Simmons and Daniel Gibson did not allow a hit or a walk in 3.1 innings of relief. Simmons (2-0, 0.93) pitched 2.1 innings and only allowed one to reach via an error to earn the victory.

The loss was Jackson's largest of the season, but there was some good news. Zach Shank walked in the second inning, and he has now reached in all 27 games he has played in thus far. The infielder ranks second in the league with a .344 average.

The Generals and BayBears go back to playing one at a time on Monday night.
