Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
With the game tied at three in the eighth inning, Chattanooga Lookouts (2-2) infielder Daniel Mayora stepped up to the plate and launched a two-run home run to spur the Lookouts to a 5-3 win over the Jackson Generals (2-2) and tie the series up at two games apiece.
Before Mayora's decisive play, the Lookouts found themselves down three runs heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Lookouts offense finally got into gear when O'Koyea Dickson blasted a home run to left field on a 2-1 pitch off of Jackson starting pitcher Victor Sanchez. After the home run, the 19-year old righty surrendered a triple to outfielder Scott Schebler. The three-bagger was the first of the season for Schebler and the first of the year for any Lookouts' player.
With Schebler on third, Ozzie Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the team's second run of the inning. After the fifth, Lookouts reliever Mike Thomas replaced starter Andres Santiago, who allowed two runs in five innings, and delivered a stellar performance out of the bullpen. Thomas combined with Hector Nelo (W, 1-0) and Pedro Baez (S, 1) to throw four straight shutout innings.
The strong effort by the bullpen kept the game in striking distance for the Lookouts heading into the fateful eighth inning. Before Mayora's game winning home run, Jeremy Hazelbaker smacked the team's second triple of the game to drive in Noel Cuevas who reached on a walk by the rehabbing Stephen Pryor (L, 0-1).
Mayora's heroics gives the Lookouts their second win of the season and turns tomorrow into the rubber match of the five game series against the Jackson Generals. RHP Garrett Gould will take the mound for the Lookouts and face off against RHP Jordan Pries at 7:15 p.m. on College Fair Night.
Notes: Prior to the game Lookouts starting pitcher Duke von Schamann (1-0, 0.00) was traded to the Cleveland Indians. Von Schamann started one game for Chattanooga and delivered seven shut out innings to lead the team to their first win of the year.
