Around the Horn: Stephenson Scorches Smokies 5-0

April 6, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

Top Reds prospect Robert Stephenson spun a five-inning gem and the Blue Wahoos' bats backed him up as Pensacola cruised to a 5-0 victory. Held hitless through three innings, Steve Selsky opened the floodgates as the Wahoos cracked the code against a Smokies' bullpen that held them scoreless last night. Wet grounds cut the game short as officials called the game at the seventh-inning stretch. Here are the highlights as we go Around the Horn:

REHABBERS GO HOME HEALTHY: Jonathan Broxton was dependable in his one-inning rehab start, working around a two-out single to set the Smokies down early. The pitcher tossed only 14 pitches, including 8 for strikes, in his final appearance with Pensacola. Catcher Devin Mesoraco went hitless and caught a baserunner stealing before exiting in the fifth after a succesful rehab stint.

STEPHENSON SIZZLES: Robert Stephenson kept Tennessee guessing with five shutout frames, holding the Smokies to one hit while striking out 11. The mark is a personal best for the young pitcher, who started his second full season of professional baseball tonight. Stephenson also collected his first hit, a sixth-inning double.

TOUCH 'EM ALL: Devin Lohman cranked Pensacola's first home run of the year, a deep shot to left field in the sixth inning. The second-year Wahoos shortstop is fourth all-time in team history with nine knocks.

PIZZA PARTY: For the second time in three nights, the Wahoos locked in an incredible deal from Papa John's. Fans can get 50% off online orders tomorrow by going to papajohns.com and using the promo code WAHOO to redeem the offer.

The Blue Wahoos have a chance to win the opening series with a victory tomorrow. First pitch is tabbed for 4:00 PM with right-hander Jon Moscot on the mound. The Fur Circus will finish their Pensacola visit with another zany night of fun for the entire family. Bring your glove and warm up your legs for Family Sunday Funday presented by McDonald's and Pensacola State College. Kids can run the bases while families play catch in the outfield under the lights of Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.

HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER

Robert Stephenson made his 2014 opener one to remember, and Kourage Kundahl will have all of the details from tonight's gem when Hook, Line, and Sinker updates tomorrow.
