Mayhem Triumph on Fan Appreciation Night

March 29, 2019 - SPHL (SPHL)
Macon Mayhem News Release

Hosting the Knoxville Ice Bears in their final home game of the regular season, the Mayhem secured a valuable two points in the standings with a 4-2 victory.

Leo Thomas had reunited the Triple-A Line to start the game, putting Alternate Captains Jake Trask, John Siemer, and Stathis Soumelidis back on the same line. The gambit paid off, as the Mayhem were able to score in the 14th minute of play. Soumelidis centered a pass for Siemer from the right corner of the Knoxville zone, and Siemer ripped a wrist shot past Cody Porter to give the Mayhem a 1-0 lead.

Jimmy Soper was penalized for interference late in the opening stanza. The Mayhem killed the ensuing penalty, but Knoxville struck just five seconds later. Liam Kerins snapped a shot from the mid-slot, beating Kevin Entmaa over the shoulder to level the score with just six seconds remaining in period one. The teams entered the first intermission tied.

Early into the second period, Derek Sutliffe raced into the right corner to win possession of the puck. He flung a pass into the slot for Caleb Cameron, who buried a shot under the left elbow of the net to beat Porter. The goal was Cameron's 9th of the season and regained Macon's advantage 4:47 into the middle frame.

Shawn Lynch had an opportunity to build on Macon's lead nine minutes into period two, but he was cross-checked on a partial breakaway which gave the Mayhem a 4-on-4. They were held off the scoresheet on the abbreviated power play which followed, and they fought off a Knoxville power play heading into the second intermission.

With two vital points on the line, the Mayhem hunkered down defensively and kept most of Knoxville's shots to the perimeter in the third period. Entmaa had seen the puck well all night, and made save after save in period three. Dakota Klecha gave the Mayhem breathing room with an insurance goal on a power play, but Knoxville dealt the building a scare on a snipe by Roberts Locans to make the score 3-2 in the closing minute. Just 15 seconds later, however, Trask iced the game with an empty-net goal, his league-leading 25th of the season.

Entmaa earned his first professional win, stopping 35 of Knoxville's 37 shots. Porter was charged with his third defeat of the regular season, denying 17 of 20. The Mayhem will head up to Knoxville to wrap up the home-and-home series at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum on Saturday night. Puck drops at 7:30 pm EST.
