Macon Mayhem News Release
MACON, GA - The Mayhem have traded defenseman Brandon Parrone to the Peoria Rivermen in exchange for future considerations. In a separate transaction, the Mayhem have acquired defenseman Kristaps Bazevics, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Leo Thomas announced today.
"We want to thank Brandon Parrone for what he did for us late last year and early this year," Thomas said. "I'm glad I could get him into a situation with a good organization. I wish him nothing but the best."
Parrone played 10 games for the Mayhem at the end of last season and played in the home opener this year. He was regarded as a steady, shot-blocking defenseman and a good teammate. However, the Mayhem have been in the hunt for an offensive defenseman who could generate some scoring from the back end and quarterback a power play, which was 0-for-8 in the opening weekend.
Bazevics, a native of Riga, Latvia, played in 55 games for the Mississippi RiverKings and led their defensemen in scoring with 30 points (5 G, 25 A). He ranked 6th in the entire SPHL in points by a defenseman and tallied a goal and six assists on the man-advantage last year.
"Kristaps had notable success last year in Mississippi," Thomas said. "He's a great skater and an offensive-style defenseman who can really help our blue line. He'll be a great asset to our hockey club."
The 24-year-old Bazevics (6'1", 201) played his junior hockey in the WHL and the NAHL before returning to Europe to play pro hockey for three seasons. His experience overseas seems to have greatly accelerated his development, as he produced at the most proficient pace in his career last season. If he is able to pick up where he left off, he will undoubtedly bring a commanding presence to Mayhem's defense corps.
This Friday night's game against the Knoxville Ice Bears will be First Responders Night, where the Mayhem will honor the men and women who put themselves in danger to protect the freedoms we enjoy. Fans are encouraged to join the Mayhem in honoring our first responders. $10 tickets will be available by presenting a first responder ID. Emergency vehicles will also be displayed outside of the arena before the game.
