Fayetteville Marksmen News Release

Another chapter of the early-season rivalry between Fayetteville and Roanoke writes itself on Friday evening, as the Marksmen travel to the Star City for a one-off weekend.

Fayetteville welcomed the Dawgs for Opening Night a week ago, and bested them by a score of 2-1 in front of nearly 2700 fans. After finding themselves down early from a Brian Rowland goal, the Marksmen clawed back with a goal from Captain Jake Hauswirth (1) late in the second period, before Alternate Captain David Mazurek (1) put it away in the late third. Rookie goaltender Dillon Kelley recorded 30 saves for the Marksmen, besting one of the SPHL's top goalies in Brad Barone.

This is the second "true" meeting between the two teams this season, but third time they'll have played each other due to a preseason contest. Fayetteville also came from behind in the preseason game for an OT win, 4-3.

Both teams come into this second-week battle with a 1-1 record, thanks to Home Opening wins, and road losses.

For the Marksmen, they fell 3-2 to Macon after a near-comeback effort. Second-year SPHLers Darren McCormick and Taylor Pryce had goals in the game, but ultimately the team ran out of time on their comeback effort. Dillon Kelley was given the loss after an over-30 save night, once again looking impressive.

Roanoke's Saturday, however, was a 4-3 win over the Knoxville Ice Bears. This was a good look for a Roanoke team who couldn't quite find their offensive opportunities against the Marksmen defense and Kelley on the previous night.

Roanoke will look to flip the script against the Marksmen, and beat them in front of hometown fans.

Fayetteville succeeded against the Dawgs largely in-part to strong first-and-third periods, coming out of the gate strong in both periods and eventually wearing out Roanoke with their conditioned play style.

Roanoke found its strength in period two largely in part to the same strategy it used the previous week: putting a young Fayetteville team back on its heels with a more system-educated veteran core. A low-offensive period favored the Dawgs tempo of play, but the Marksmen were able to find their stride again.
