Coming off a game in which they had just had a third period explosion, the Mayhem suffered a four-goal third period onslaught at the hands of the Marksmen and fell by a 5-2 decision.
Ian Sylves picked up right where he left off last Saturday and continued his prominence in goal, turning aside all 16 shots he faced in the first period of play. Though Fayetteville's quantity of shots was considerably higher than Macon's in period one, the Mayhem's quality of shots was better. Jake Trask and John Siemer each had high-end scoring chances, but were robbed on odd-man rushes multiple times by Marksmen goaltender Nathan Perry.
To start period two, Macon had 1:50 of carryover time on a slashing infraction against David Mazurek. On the tail end of the man-advantage, Derek Sutliffe fed Dakota Klecha a pass on his off-wing. Playing in his first game after suspension, Klecha fired a shot from a tough angle which was dealt aside by Perry. However, the rebound leaked out into the slot, where Seth Ronsberg smashed the puck into the net to draw first blood for the Mayhem.
Fayetteville had a response 12:18 into the middle frame. Cory Melkert teed up a shot from the right point, which was redirected by Cody Brown past Sylves to snap the Macon net-minder's shutout bid. However, the Mayhem recovered their lead just 3:23 later. Siemer probed down the right wing and flung a sharp-angle shot at the net. Somehow, it fooled Perry and squeaked past his equipment and over the goal line, giving the Mayhem a 2-1 advantage to close out the second period.
For the second straight time, the Mayhem began the period with power play time carrying over. Fayetteville promptly fought it off this time, however, and gained substantial momentum from doing so. 2:40 into the period, Kyle Thacker blasted a shot on net from center ice. It fooled Sylves and knuckled past him, tying the game on a fluke play for the Marksmen. Ten minutes later, Brandon McMartin scored a power play goal in his debut to give Fayetteville its first lead of the game.
Kristaps Bazevics and Zach Urban each got into late fights near the benches, but their efforts could not spark their team. Mazurek and Melkert each added goals, completing Fayetteville's third period rout of the Mayhem. Sylves was charged with his tenth regulation defeat on the season, stopping 38 of the Marksmen's 43 shots on goal. Perry earned his seventh win, stopping 17 of 19. The Mayhem will close out the road series tomorrow night at the Crown Coliseum. Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm EST.
