Mayhem Point Streak Ends in Fayetteville
February 9, 2020 - SPHL (SPHL)
Macon Mayhem News Release
Playing their third game in as many days, the Mayhem had their three-game point streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon in Fayetteville as they fell to the Marksmen by a 4-1 score.
Mayhem goaltender Hayden Stewart had a terrific start to the game, making multiple difficult saves including a breakaway stop on Fayetteville's top goal-scorer Brian Bowen. He held off an early onslaught from the Marksmen, turning aside all 17 shots on goal he faced in the first period. Astoundingly, the game was kept scoreless at the start of the first intermission.
Fayetteville Captain Max Cook would finally put the Marksmen on the board, scoring on a rebound off Stewart's pads 5:57 into the second period. Shortly afterward, newly acquired forward Canon Pieper flung the puck on net off a board bounce in the Macon corner, doubling the Fayetteville lead with 6:44 to go in the middle frame. Cook scored a second goal late in the second with 4:40 to go, breaking the game open.
Former Mayhem defenseman Jarret Kup added a fourth goal for the hosts 2:43 into the closing stanza. Macon played much stronger in the third period than they had in the previous two thirds of the game, but could not erase the sizeable deficit. Stephen Pierog did, however, spoil the shutout bid of Fayetteville goaltender Brody Claeys. The Mayhem Captain buried his 8th goal of the season 13:14 into the closing period, but that would be all the team could conjure.
Stewart was charged with the defeat, stopping 28 of the 32 shots the Marksmen sent his way. Claeys was particularly strong in the third period, denying 29 of Macon's 30. The Mayhem will travel to Pensacola next weekend to take on the Ice Flyers on Valentine's Day and on Saturday, February 15th. Puck drops at the Pensacola Bay Center at 8:35 pm ET on Friday, and at 8:05 pm ET Saturday.
