Mayhem Ground Ice Flyers with 4-2 Home Victory

MACON, GA- Macon Mayhem goaltender Charlie Finn stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced on Thursday night, guiding the Mayhem to a 4-2 home victory over the Pensacola Ice Flyers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

For the fourth straight game, the Mayhem took the initial lead. Stathis Soumelidis and Dylan Denomme forced a turnover, and John Siemer ripped a shot into the top corner for the only goal of the first period. Macon dominated the first period, outshooting Pensacola 17-4.

Pensacola tied the game up at one apiece with a power play goal in the second period. Charlie Adams wristed a shot into the top corner to tie the game. In the final five minutes of the second period, Dylan Vander Esch tipped a Zach Urban shot in on the power play to retake the lead.

The Mayhem padded their lead to 4-1 in the opening minutes of the third period. Just one minute into the final frame, Kevin Irwin tipped a Vinny Muto point shot home to take a two-goal lead. Three minutes later, Zach Urban found Stathis Soumelidis cutting to the net on the power play. After the initial save, Soumelidis poked the rebound in to take the 4-1 lead. Despite a Pensacola goal with six minutes left, the Mayhem held on for the crucial 4-2 victory.

NOTABLE STATS

Goaltender Charlie Finn made his 30th appearance of his rookie season with the start tonight. He picked up his 18th victory of the season, stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced, and he is now 5-2-1 since the start of March.

Stathis Soumelidis recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick, recording a goal, an assist and a fight in the game. He and Zach Urban led the team with two points apiece, as Urban recorded two assists. Urban now has eight assists in his last six games.

The Mayhem power play went two-for-five on the night. They have now scored at least one power play goal in eight of their last nine games, and they have scored two or more power play goals in four of the last seven games. They have converted on 14 of their last 41 man-advantage opportunities, converting on a 34.1% clip.

COACH KERR'S COMMENTS

"We seem to be playing our best hockey at the right time. I like the way this team is coming together. They battled really hard tonight on both ends of the ice, and I thought we played just an all-around really good game."
