MACON, GA - The Mayhem fell by a 10-3 decision at the hands of the Evansville Thunderbolts on Friday night. It was the largest margin of defeat the Mayhem had suffered in franchise history.
A rocky first period plagued the Mayhem, who were outscored 4-0 in the opening 20 minutes of play. Though they outshot their opponents 14-10 in period one, they conceded an overwhelming number of odd-man rushes and high-end scoring chances. Evansville converted on nearly all of them.
Matthew Barnaby capitalized off a turnover in the Mayhem zone, shoveling a backhand shot past Cody Porter from atop the crease. Halfway through the period, Jacob Smith finished off a crisp passing play on an Evansville power play, rifling a wrist shot short-side from the left circle. Demico Hannoun took advantage of a 2-on-1, netting a third goal which forced Porter out of the game. He was replaced by star Macon net-minder Kevin Entmaa, who coughed up a rebound goal to former Mayhem sniper Derek Sutliffe 18:02 into the game.
Things did not improve for the Mayhem come period two, as Sutliffe tallied another score quickly to score his second of the game. Connor Sanvido cleaned up a rebound off of Entmaa's pads, and Hannoun potted his second of the night, as well. The Mayhem found themselves trailing 7-0 just halfway through regulation time.
Finally, the Mayhem found a way to solve Braeden Ostepchuk. Captain Stephen Pierog collected his third goal on the season to finish off a centering pass by Danny Cesarz. However, Jacob Smith responded less than three minutes later with a snipe from the slot to quickly silence any momentum the Mayhem had gained.
Both teams traded goals in the third period. Hayden Hulton and Stanislav Dzakhov tallied for Evansville, while Josh Cousineau and Stathis Soumelidis struck for Macon. Ultimately, the Mayhem had allowed ten goals on the night, which broke the previous record of 8 for most goals allowed in a game (8-3 Loss vs. Mississippi Riverkings on 02/03/18).
