Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

MIDLAND, TX - Like the RockHounds Tuesday, Corpus Christi employed the eighth as a springboard to victory. Jack Mayfield's three-run home run capped a five-run frame as the Hooks rallied for a 5-3 triumph Wednesday night at Security Bank Ballpark.

With Midland (40-18, 75-53) up 2-0, A.J. Reed drove a double to centerfield. Jon Kemmer followed with a base hit to right, putting runners at the corners. One out later, back-to-back singles by Conrad Gregor and Alfredo Gonzalez tied the game. Omar Duran (2-2) left in favor of Seth Frankhoff, whose 2-1 pitch to Mayfield landed over the 15-foot fence in left.

Ruben Alaniz (5-3) earned the victory, spreading two runs and six hits over seven innings. Alaniz threw 58 of 92 pitches for strikes.

Tyler Brunnemann took over in the eighth and yielded a lead-off home run by Colin Walsh, who has reached base all nine times in the series. Brunnemann retired the next two, but a Chad Pinder double knocked him out of the game. Chris Cotton recorded the last out, inducing a fly ball from Matt Olson.

Jandel Gustave bypassed a lead-off single in the ninth for his 16th save.

The Hooks (32-26, 80-48) were shackled by Kris Hall, making a spot start, and Jonathan Joseph, who combined for seven scoreless innings. Corpus Christi stranded nine on base through the first six frames.

With the series level, Kyle Westwood (9-6, 4.58) gets the start for the Hooks in Game 3. Midland looks to lefty Dillon Overton (3-2, 3.96). First pitch 7 p.m.
