Midland RockHounds News Release
For the second straight night, Colin Walsh reached base in each of his plate appearances as he went 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs score and fell a double short of the cycle in the RockHounds' 5-3 loss to the Corpus Christi Hooks on Wednesday night at Security Bank Ballpark. Over the last two weeks, the RockHounds have expanded their lead in the Texas League South Division race, moving to the brink of a playoff spot and (perhaps) a second half title. The first half champion Corpus Christi Hooks, who still (it should be pointed out) have the league's best overall record, said "not so fast," defeating the RockHounds, 5-3, in a come-from-behind victory Wednesday night at Security Bank Ballpark.
The Hooks left nine men on base in the first six innings (six in scoring position) and trailed, 2-0, after seven. Corpus Christi then busted loose in the eighth, collecting four hits against Omar Duran, the last two a pair of RBI singles from Conrad Gregor and Alfredo Gonzalez, tying the game at 2-2. Seth Frankoff relieved Duran and gave up a three-run home run to Jack Mayfield, giving the Hooks a 5-2 lead.
Colin Walsh homered in the eighth and Jaycob Brugman led off the ninth with a single against Hooks closer Jandel Gustave, but the right-hander got the next three outs to earn his 16th save of the season.
The RockHounds saw a six-game win streak snapped and their playoff drive put "on hold" for at least a day.
The RockHounds
... are 40-18 in the second half and 75-53 overall (after setting a new season-high at 23 games over .500) ... saw a six-game win streak snapped ... have won six-of-seven and 13-of-16 ... are 29-11 in their last 40 games (a .725 winning percentage) ... are 13-17 versus the Corpus Christi Hooks in 2015 (6-8 at Security Bank Ballpark an 7-9 at Whataburger Field) ... are 42-23 at Security Bank Ballpark (still the league's best home mark) and 33-30 on the road (a season-best three above .500) ... are 46-34 vs. the South Division and 29-19 vs. the North.
Kibbles & Bits
STAT OF THE DAY Colin Walsh went 3-for-3 with a walk, finishing a double shy of the cycle and has now reached base in each of his nine plate appearances in the first two games of the series. He has reached base in 18 straight games, with a .365 (23-for-63) batting average with 26 walks and one HBP (a .556 on-base percentage). Dating back to May 4, Colin has reached base in 93 of 100 games.
- Ryon Healy saw a 10-game hit streak come to an end, but also drove in his 60th run of the season with a sacrifice fly. Healy has hit in 10 of his last 11 games (21-for-51, .412) ... 22 of his last 24 games (42-for-107, .393) and is hitting .384 in his last 39 games.
By the Numbers
Texas League South: The RockHounds' lead over Corpus Christi (32-26) is now at eight games with 12 to play (Thursday and Friday night's games are the final regular season meetings between the two clubs). Frisco's win over San Antonio (25-33) prevented the 'Hounds from clinching a playoff berth (San Antonio has already been mathematically eliminated).
Magic numbers:
- One (1) to clinch a playoff spot (eliminating Frisco) ... one RockHounds win or one RoughRiders loss
- Five (5) to clinch the second half pennant (over Corpus Christi) ... any combination of RockHounds wins and Hooks losses
The RockHounds have 12 games to play in the regular season: Frisco (six, three home and three road), San Antonio (four, road) and Corpus Christi (two, home).
