ADELANTO, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped a pair of games on Wednesday night, as the High Desert Mavericks swept a doubleheader at Heritage Field.

The Quakes blew a seven-run lead in game one's 12-11 loss and then were unable to establish any momentum in game two, giving up a first-inning grand slam and never coming within striking distance of the first-place Mavs in a 5-1 defeat.

Game one looked like a sure win for the Quakes, as Rancho Cucamonga grabbed an early seven-run lead and clubbed five home runs, but fell in walk-off fashion.

The Mavericks earned the walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh inning against Quakes' reliever Dan Tillman (1-4). Alberto Triunfel delivered a one-out double to left field. Chris Garia walked and Isiah Kiner-Falefa walked to load the bases. Joe Jackson's single to left scored Triunfel with the game-winning run, touching off a celebration on the field for High Desert's 12-11 victory.

The Quakes rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh against Mavericks' reliever John Fasola (3-2). Johan Mieses doubled to open the inning. Cody Bellinger launched a two-run homer to center field for his second of the game and 25th of the season. Jacob Scavuzzo immediately followed with a solo home run to center for his ninth of the year, knotting the contest at 11-11.

Rancho Cucamonga wasted no time in getting to Mavericks' starter David Ledbetter. Tim Locastro was hit by a pitch to lead off the first inning. Mieses singled to left field. Brandon Dixon clobbered a three-run homer off the left-center field scoreboard for his 11th long ball of the season. Bellinger added a solo blast to center field. The back-to-back jacks staked the visitors to a 4-0 lead.

The rally continued as Ogle doubled to right-center field. Joey Curletta singled up the middle, scoring Ogle as center fielder Garia misplayed the ball. Delvis Morales singled to right, placing runners at first and second. Locastro, batting for the second time in the inning, stroked a triple to right-center field, chasing Curletta and Morales home to complete the outburst and give Rancho Cucamonga a 7-0 advantage. The Quakes sent 11 men to the plate in the opening frame and pounded out seven hits.

High Desert began their comeback against Quakes' starter Brock Stewart. Kevin Torres and Tripp Martin singled and Triunfel was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Garia served a single to center field, plating Torres and Martin. Kiner-Falefa doubled to the right-center field gap, scoring Triunfel and Garia. Royce Bolinger capped the five-run frame with a single to shallow right field, allowing Kiner-Falefa to trot home and trim the deficit to 7-5.

Rancho Cucamonga responded in the top of the third against Ledbetter. Ogle launched a solo homer to deep left-center field for his 17th of the season and second of the series, giving the Quakes an 8-5 edge.

The Mavericks grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third against reliever Matt Shelton (0-2). Ronald Guzman and Torres drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. Martin singled to left field, scoring Guzman and advancing Torres to third on the throw home. Garia's sacrifice fly to right field plated Torres and moved Martin to third base. Kiner-Falefa blooped a single into center field, chasing Martin home. Jackson singled, placing runners at first and second. Bolinger singled to shallow left field as Kiner-Falefa hustled home, giving the home team a 9-8 lead.

High Desert added a run against Shelton in the bottom of the fourth. Guzman doubled down the right field line and came home on Torres' single to center field, making it a 10-8 contest.

The Mavericks tacked on another insurance tally against Shelton in the fifth. Garia drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Kiner-Falefa flared a single to center field, scoring Garia to give the South Division leaders an 11-8 cushion, setting the stage for the wild finish.

Game two saw Quakes' starter Joe Broussard, in his first start as a Quake, get shelled for five runs in the first inning. Jackson struck again for the Mavs, as his RBI single plated Garia for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Martin clubbed a grand slam to cap the Mavs' five-run inning at 5-0.

Broussard (1-2) would settle down to give the Quakes five good innings, but the damage was already done.

High Desert starter David Perez (2-0) was strong, striking out ten hitters over five innings, allowing just one run on four hits to earn the win.

Spencer Navin got the Quakes on the board in the third, as he doubled to open the inning and later scored on a passed ball by Mavs' catcher David Lyon, making it a 5-1 game.

That would be it offensively for Rancho though, as they collected just a total of four hits in game two.

High Desert reliever Pat Kaminska fired two scoreless innings to finish it off.

The Mavs (24-19, 61-52) now lead the Quakes (22-23, 63-52) by three games in the second-half standings and have closed to within one game overall.

Rancho looks to split the four-game series on Thursday night, sending Pablo Fernandez (1-0) to the mound against Mavs' right-hander Richelson Pena (9-7) in the series-finale at 7:05pm.

Rancho Cucamonga will return to LoanMart Field on Friday, August 14th to begin a six-game homestand against Lake Elsinore and High Desert! The series opener against the Storm will be a Family RV $1 Family Feast Night, featuring $1 hot dogs, 12-ounce Pepsi products and ice cream sandwiches, courtesy of Family RV!
