San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants were held to two hits for a second time in the last three games during a 6-0 shutout loss to the Visalia Rawhide on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. The defeat was San Jose's second straight to begin the series and their sixth loss in the last seven games overall. The Giants (26-19) are now two games behind Visalia (28-17) in the second half North Division race.

Markus Solbach (1-0), in his California League debut, picked-up the win for the Rawhide after tossing eight scoreless innings with just two singles allowed. Solbach, who was added to the Visalia roster from Kane County (A) last weekend, walked three and struck out five.

The game was scoreless through three innings as Solbach and San Jose starter Jordan Johnson both cruised early in the contest. Johnson allowed only one single over the first three frames before running into trouble in the top of the fourth. With one out, Daniel Palka blasted a triple off the wall down the right field line and immediately scored when the next batter, Kevin Cron, grounded a single into right.

Mitch Haniger connected for a solo home run off of Johnson in the top of the fifth to push the Rawhide lead to 2-0. Palka then went deep to begin the sixth inning for a 3-0 cushion. Johnson was pulled from the game after allowing a two-out single to Gerson Montilla in the sixth, but reliever Christian Jones promptly gave up back-to-back singles to Jose Queliz and Kevin Medrano leading to another run and a 4-0 deficit.

Johnson (1-1) was charged with four runs (all earned) on six hits over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. He walked one and struck out six.

Visalia added another run in the seventh against Jones (1 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) as Domingo Leyba led off with a double, moved to third on Jamie Westbrook's groundout and scored when Palka hit a sacrifice fly. Haniger then completed the scoring for the night with his second home run of the game - a solo shot in the top of the ninth off of Dan Slania (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO).

Meanwhile, the only two Giants hits were a bunt single from Daniel Carbonell in the bottom of the second and an Angel Villalona sharp single down the left field line in the fourth. San Jose had only two baserunners over the final five innings - Christian Arroyo reaching on an error in the sixth and Seth Harrison drawing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth. The Giants did not advance a runner past first base for the entire game.
