Lancaster JetHawks News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The JetHawks failed to take advantage of numerous run-scoring opportunities en route to a 5-4 loss to the Inland Empire 66ers on Wednesday night at San Manuel Stadium.
Despite the leadoff hitter reaching base in seven of nine innings, the JetHawks (58-57) went just 2-for-13 with men in scoring position, leaving a total of seven runners stranded.
Derek Fisher hit his 14th home run for Lancaster in the fourth inning, and Mott Hyde extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the seventh.
Brandon Bayardi gave the 66ers (57-56) the lead in the bottom of the second with an inside-the-park home run off Austin Chrismon (5-3). In the third, Eric Aguilera hit a sacrifice fly and Caleb Adams added a solo homer for a 3-0 advantage.
Fisher brought the JetHawks within one run on a two-run homer to left-center off Jordan Kipper (6-8) in the top of the fourth, and Chrismon recovered to retire the side in order in the bottom half. But in the bottom of the fifth, the 66ers extended their lead to three runs on an Aguilera RBI-single and a Kody Eaves sacrifice fly.
Over five innings of work, Chrismon surrendered five runs on nine hits and took the loss for Lancaster.
With Alan Busenitz on the mound in relief for Inland Empire, Chase McDonald led off the seventh with a double and reached third on a Hyde single. James Ramsay then plated McDonald with a base hit to right field, and an Alex Bregman groundout scored Hyde from third to make the score 5-4.
J.D. Davis led off the eighth inning with a single and reached third on a misplayed grounder at second base, but was thrown out at third on a missed suicide squeeze attempt before two groundouts ended the threat.
In the top of the ninth, Geoff Broussard issued a leadoff walk to Hyde, putting the tying run on first base. But after a Marc Wik sacrifice bunt advanced Hyde to second, Broussard struck out the next two batters to hand the JetHawks the loss and force a rubber game.
Kevin Comer, Jordan Mills and Andrew Walter combined for three innings of scoreless relief for Lancaster.
First pitch for the rubber game of the series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday. Akeem Bostick (3-4, 6.34) will take the mound for the JetHawks opposite Inland Empire's Victor Alcantara (6-9, 5.84).
