Mavs lose 7-2

September 4, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

Coming off a seemingly momentum-building comeback win in Rancho Cucamonga Thursday night, the Mavs fell flat on Friday, losing 7-2 in Lake Elsinore.

The Mavs actually did put that momentum to good use in the first inning, scoring twice. Kyle Seager collected an RBI double, and two batters later Kuo Hui Lo hit an RBI single to make it 2-0.

That's when the trouble began. After the Mavs had runners and second and third with one out, they could not score again.

It was a sign of things to come, as the Mavs notched just two hits the rest of the night, and had a runner in scoring position once.

The Storm immediately tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Cole Figueroa and Rymer Liriano each had RBI doubles to make it 2-2.

The game remained tied until the fourth. Luis Nunez committed an error on the first play of the inning, and a passed ball by Ralph Henriquez put a runner in scoring position with two outs.

The Storm took advantage of the error, as Brad Chalk notched a two- out RBI single to give Lake Elsinore the lead.

Allan Dykstra provided the final four runs of the night, all with two outs. He nearly hit a homer in the fifth, hitting one off the top of the wall in right field for a two-run double.

He cleared the wall with ease in the seventh on a two-run homer that finished the scoring for the Storm.

Lake Elsinore ended up scoring each of their last six runs with two outs, and went 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position and two down. They collected at least one hit every inning and outhit the Mavs 12-5.

After a rocky first inning, Storm starting pitcher Rob Musgrave settled down and was nearly untouchable for his remaining four frames. Musgrave (4-4) retired 14 of the last 15 batter he faced, striking out six with one walk.

Andrew Carraway had been 4-0 in five starts against the Mavs, but the Storm finally hung a loss on him in their sixth attempt. Carraway (11-8) allowed five runs and eight hits over five innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Rancho Cucamonga also defeated Lancaster 8-3 Friday night, putting the Mavericks two games back of first place with just three to play.

The Mavs will look for a better effort Saturday night when they face the Storm at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
