San Jose Giants News Release
The Visalia Rawhide scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning against San Jose starter Kyle Woodruff and never looked back in a 5-2 victory over the Giants on Friday evening at Municipal Stadium. In the opening game of the final series of the regular season, San Jose committed three errors and could not overcome the early three-run deficit. The loss drops the Giants' overall record to 73-64 with only three games remaining in the regular season.
Woodruff (3-3) suffered the loss for San Jose despite not allowing an unearned run over five innings of work. The right-hander surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out one.
Francisco Peguero finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. James Simmons (2-for-4, RBI) also knocked out two hits. The Giants out-hit Visalia by an 8-7 margin.
The game began with Rawhide leadoff batter Niko Gallego hitting a ground ball to third base that was mishandled by Jose Flores for an error. After Alfredo Marte singled up the middle, Marc Krauss lined a single into right center plating Gallego. On the play, first baseman Drew Biery cut off Peguero's throw from the outfield and had an opportunity to retire Marte at third, however his throw sailed past Flores for another error as a second run came home. Two batters later, Krauss scored on a one-out wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Dan Taylor (7-6) earned the victory after limiting the Giants to a pair of runs (one earned) on six hits over six innings of work. The Visalia starter, who at one point retired 11 consecutive San Jose hitters from the first through the fifth innings, struck out five and walked none.
Simmons gave the Giants their first baserunner since the bottom of the first when he reached on a one-out, infield single in the fifth. After Biery was hit by a pitch and Matt Klimas struck out, Peguero bounced a single through the hole on the left side to plate Simmons with San Jose's first run of the evening.
The Rawhide though answered in the top of the sixth as Josh Ford led off by driving an 0-2 pitch from reliever Scott Nestor over the fence in center field for a solo homer. The home run, Ford's 19th of the season, gave Visalia a 4-1 lead.
The Giants moved back to within two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Charlie Culberson began a rally by reaching base on a two-out error. After Michael Sandoval singled to left advancing Culberson to third, Simmons brought home the run with an infield single to third. Taylor though recovered inducing the next hitter, Biery, to ground into a fielder's choice.
The Rawhide took a 5-2 lead in the top of the seventh as Gallego led off with a double before Marte dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but reached base when Nestor threw wildly to first for an error. Krauss then bounced into a double play as Gallego scored Visalia's fifth run of the night.
The Giants didn't put more than one runner on base in any of the last three innings against the Rawhide bullpen. Facing Billy Spottiswood, Peguero doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Perez followed by striking out. In the eighth, Flores drew a leadoff walk - the only inning that the first batter reached base safely for San Jose. Spottiswood though set down the next three hitters to keep the Visalia lead at three runs. Then in the ninth, Peguero hammered a two-out double to deep right center field, but Rawhide closer Yonata Ortega struck out Perez to end the game.
Ortega worked the final inning to pick-up his 11th save of the season.
