Mavs Get Swept 6-2 Against Bakersfield
August 11, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
The Mavs recent woes followed them home from Stockton, as they committed three errors and went 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position while falling 6-2 Tuesday night against Bakersfield.
All three errors occurred within the first three innings, aiding the Blaze in taking a 4-0 lead.
Leading off the game, David Paisano tripled on an 0-2 pitch. Cody Podraza then followed with an RBI single to get Bakersfield on the board.
With two on and one out later in the inning, Mike Bianucci struck out on a pitch in the dirt. Podraza took off for third, but Tevor Coleman's throw went into left field allowing Podraza to score.
Two innings later, Miguel Velasquez was up with a man at first and one out. He appeared to send an ideal double play ball to third, but Rich Poythress couldn't handle it.
Later in the inning, Maikel Cleto threw a wild pitch. Coleman attempted to throw a runner out a third, but he had another errant throw to bring home another run.
Chris McGuiness finished the inning with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
The Mavs got on the board in third when Johermyn Chavez brought home Kyle Seager on a ground ball to short.
Chavez collected an RBI single in the fifth to cut the lead in half and pull the Mavs within 4-2.
Problem was, that was the only hit with a runner in scoring position by the Mavs, who are now 1 for their last 20. They would end up stranding 12 men on base, including nine in scoring position.
While Seager and Chavez combined to go 5-for-10 with both RBI's and both runs scored, the rest of the team went 2-for-26.
Doug Hogan hit a solo homer in the sixth for Bakersfield, and Podraza added his first homer in the ninth. The Mavs have now allowed 10 home runs over their last four games.
The Mavs would load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth, but Poythress lined out to right to end the game.
Blaze starting pitcher Robbie Ross claimed the win, allowing two runs over five innings. Ross (4-2) gave up five hits and limited the Mavs to a 1-for-11 mark with runners in scoring position. He struck out five and walked one.
Cleto (3-6) tossed his longest home start of the year, but ended up with second consecutive loss. He surrendered five runs, but only three were earned. Cleto gave up eight hits and tied a season high with seven strikeouts.
Now losers of four straight, the Mavs will look to snap the skid Wednesday night when they face the Blaze at 7:05 p.m. It's the final Meet the Mavericks Wednesday where you can go down on the field before the game to get autographs from your favorite players.
