Late Home Run Sinks JetHawks
August 11, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Lancaster JetHawks News Release
Jose Flores hit a solo home run over the outstretched glove of Brandon Barnes in the top of the 10th inning to give San Jose a 5-4 victory over Lancaster at Clear Channel Stadium Tuesday. Lancaster drew first blood when Barnes hit an RBI single that plated Jay Austin in the bottom of the first and gave the JetHawks a 1-0 lead.
But San Jose immediately answered when James Simmons belted a two-run homer off JetHawks starter Patrick Urckfitz in the top of the second. The Giants added a run in the third and another in the fourth to open up a 4-1 edge.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, David Flores smacked a solo home run off Giants starter Jorge Bucardo to bring Lancaster within a run. Flores' blast chased Bucardo from the game after the right-hander allowed six hits and three earned runs in five and 2/3 innings of work.
Two innings later, Brian Pellegrini socked a solo homer off Giants reliever Dan Otero (1-0) to even the score at 4-4. But Flores' blast off Brian Wabick (3-5) gave San Jose a lead it would not relinquish. Jason Stoffel tossed a scoreless frame in the bottom of the 10th to pick up his 22nd save.
With the win, the Giants improved to 20-25 in the second half and 65-50 overall. The JetHawks fell to 21-24 in the second half and 44-71 overall.
The JetHawks will seek to win the rubber match of the three-game set when the two teams meet Wednesday night. Lancaster will start right-hander Leandro Cespedes (2-4, 5.85 ERA). The Giants are expected to counter with right-hander Oliver Odle (11-5, 5.09 ERA). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. Tune in for all the live action beginning with the JetHawks Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m. on www.jethawks.com/csn and News Talk 1380-AM.
