San Jose Giants News Release
Jose Flores hit a tiebreaking solo home run to leadoff the top of the 10th inning before Jason Stoffel struck out the side in the bottom of the frame as the San Jose Giants earned a 5-4 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Tuesday evening at Clear Channel Stadium. San Jose has now won six out of their last eight games to improve their overall record to 65-50.
Flores' (4-for-5, HR, RBI) game-winning homer capped a four-hit performance to lead the Giants offensive attack. Francisco Peguero (3-for-6, 2 2B) added three hits, including a pair of doubles, while James Simmons (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) blasted his 10th home run of the season.
San Jose was unable to hold a 4-1 lead as the JetHawks plated single runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Lancaster's Brian Pellegrini blasted a solo homer to deep left center field off of Dan Otero to tie the game. Flores though would put the Giants back in front when he lofted a 2-2 pitch from JetHawks reliever Brian Wabick over the fence in right field for his fifth homer of the year.
Stoffel (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) entered the game to begin the bottom of the 10th inning and promptly struck out Jonathan Villar before Brandon Barnes bounced a single into left field. Stoffel though recovered to strikeout Andy Simunic swinging before Pellegrini was called out on strikes to end the game. Stoffel was credited with his 22nd save of the season.
Otero (1-0) picked-up his first win since joining the Giants as the reliever worked two innings with one run and two hits allowed. After surrendering the tying run in the eighth, Otero pitched around a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra-innings.
Lancaster took an early 1-0 lead against San Jose starter Jorge Bucardo in the bottom of the first as Jay Austin begin the inning by drawing a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch and then scoring on Barnes' one-out single into left.
The Giants though would immediately answer in the top of the second as Ehire Adrianza singled sharply up the middle with two outs before Simmons belted a two-run homer to deep right center field.
San Jose added to their lead in the top of the third when Peguero led off with a double into the left field corner before Juan Perez reached on a bunt single. Two batters later, Michael Sandoval delivered a sacrifice fly to center plating Peguero for a 3-1 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, Flores began the inning with a single and eventually scored when the JetHawks botched a potential inning-ending double play as second baseman Jose Altuve threw wildly to first for an error.
Bucardo worked the first 5 2/3 innings for the Giants and surrendered three runs (all earned) on six hits. He walked three and struck out three. Bucardo exited the game after yielding a two-out, solo homer to David Flores in the bottom of the sixth inning that brought Lancaster to within 4-3. Ryan Verdugo then tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen before Pellegrini's game-tying homer in the eighth off of Otero.
Perez (2-for-4) and Charlie Culberson (2-for-4, 2 SB) also finished with multi-hit games at the plate for San Jose. The Giants out-hit the JetHawks by a 14-10 margin.
