Mavs Get Swept 4-2 In Finale

August 9, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

After losing each of the first two games in Stockton, the Mavs couldn't or keep the Ports inside the park on Sunday and ended up getting swept 4-2 in the finale.

Like the two previous games, the Mavs would take the early lead. Rich Poythress hit a solo homer in the second, his 24th on the season. The slugging first baseman also became the first player in professional baseball to reach 100 RBI this season.

Also like the two previous games, the Ports relied on the longball to take the lead and control of the game. For the second straight day, Stockton hit back-to-back home runs. This time they came in the third, when Yusuf Carter hit a two-run shot, following by a solo blast by Tyler Ladendorf.

The Mavs were able to pull within one in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kyle Seager drew a walk to make it 3-2.

However, they just couldn't get a hit when they really needed it, as Shaver Hansen struck out looking to end the inning.

Mavericks starting pitcher Jimmy Gillheeney had been pitching well after some early struggles until he faced Ladendorf again in the sixth. Ladendorf--who had three home runs the entire season coming into Sunday--took Gillheeney deep again, putting Stockton ahead by two.

Another theme of the series was the Mavericks inability to fight back late. They were listless against the Ports bullpen, as the last 11 hitters were retired in order to finish the game.

Stockton closer Paul Smyth worked a drama free ninth, collecting two strikeouts while earning his 19th save.

Starting pitcher Fabian Williamson cruised through his first four innings before getting in and out of trouble in the fifth. Williamson (3-0) exited after 5.2 innings, allowing two runs and four hits. He struck out five and walked three.

About the only positive thing that happened on Sunday for the Mavs was the way Gillheeney battled. He labored through his first two innings and gave up a pair of homers in the third.

Gillheeney (1-1) would get through six innings, but it wouldn't be enough to aid the Mavs. The lefty ended up setting a new career high with 10 strikeouts.

After dropping four of six on the road trip, the Mavs will head home to face the Bakersfield Blaze on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
