Quakes Can\'t Complete Sweep, Fall 4-3 on Sunday
August 9, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The Quakes missed an opportunity to sit alone atop the South Division standings, as they couldn't complete the sweep of the Inland Empire 66ers, falling 4-3 on Sunday night at the Epicenter. With High Desert losing and Lake Elsinore winning, the Quakes are now one of three teams sporting a 23-20 second-half record.
With the Quakes up 2-1 in the fourth, the 66ers plated all the runs they needed, as Pedro Baez knocked a three-run double that put Inland Empire in the lead, 4-2.
The 66ers capitalized on a bunt base-hit and two walks from Quakes' starter Matt Shoemaker (7-8), with one out in the fourth to load the bases. Austin Gallagher fouled out for the second out of the inning, but Baez cleared the bases, ripping one off the top of the right-field wall to put Inland Empire up for good. Of the four runs that Shoemaker allowed on the night, three reached on walks as the Quakes' righthander struggled with his command, walking five total batters and hitting three batters in 4 1/3 innings.
Rancho made the most of a couple of 66ers' errors, the first of which put them on the board in the second. Clay Fuller reached on a fielding error by shortstop Chris Gutierrez and eventually scored on a passed ball off the glove of Tony Delmonico, putting the Quakes ahead 1-0.
With one on in the third, the 66ers answered on an Austin Gallagher single that tied the score at one. Gallagher advanced to second on a single from Baez, but right fielder Angel Castillo saved the go-ahead run with a leaping catch against the right field wall, robbing Steven Caseres of an RBI knock.
The Quakes retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Gabe Jacobo's grounder to third was misplayed by Baez, allowing Luis Jimenez to score, making it 2-1.
With Inland Empire leading 4-2 in the fifth, the Quakes challenged, as Alberto Rosario walked to lead off the inning. Jimenez and Jacobo followed with singles to load the bases. Rosario then scored on an Aaron Miller (3-4) wild pitch, but the Quakes couldn't overcome the deficit. With one out and the bases loaded, Eric Oliver grounded into a double-play, ending the threat.
Despite a strong outing from reliever Christian Scholl who struck out six in 3 1/3 innings, the Quakes couldn't deliver with the tying run on in the ninth.
With Darwin Perez aboard at first base, Rosario lined into a double-play to end the game, giving Matt Sartor his seventh save of the year.
The Quakes are off Monday, traveling to Anaheim to be recognized as part of Quakes Day at Angels Stadium. After the day off, they travel to Lake Elsinore for a three-game set on Tuesday, before returning to the Epicenter on Friday, August 13th to take on the Stockton Ports in another three-game series. Friday night is Torii Hunter Bobblehead Giveaway, as 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a Torii Hunter Bobblehead Doll, thanks to All-Star Kia and KFROG 95.1.
Tickets are available by calling 909-481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at the Epicenter August 13th... Go Quakes!
