San Jose Giants News Release
Kyle Nicholson tossed six effective innings and the San Jose Giants pounded out 13 hits in a 4-2 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze on Sunday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Nicholson took a shutout into the sixth inning before relievers Brian Anderson and Jason Stoffel combined to set down the last eight Blaze hitters of the game as San Jose took two of three in the series. The Giants improved their overall record to 64-49.
Francisco Peguero (3-for-5, RBI, SB) delivered his second consecutive three-hit game to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Juan Perez (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Jose Flores (2-for-5, RBI) and Joel Weeks (2-for-4, 2B) also finished with two hits each.
Nicholson (7-8) limited the Blaze to a single run on four hits during his stint on the mound. The Giants starter struck out five and walked one. Stoffel struck out a pair in a perfect bottom of the ninth to pick-up his 21st save of the year.
San Jose never trailed in the contest scoring once in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Peguero started the game with a single before stealing second base with one out. Flores then lined a single into right center easily scoring Peguero with the first run. Flores was thrown out at second on the play as he attempted to stretch the hit into a double.
The Giants extended their lead in the top of the fourth as Johnny Monell led off with a single, stole second with one out and advanced to third when the throw from catcher Vin DeFazio bounced into center field for an error. Drew Biery followed with a ground ball single up the middle to plate Monell for a 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, Wendell Fairley singled to lead off before Peguero reached on a one-out fielding error committed by shortstop Andres James. The runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch with Fairley scoring when Perez bounced a single into left field.
Nicholson began his outing by setting down 10 out of the first 11 Blaze hitters that came to the plate. Bakersfield threatened in the bottom of the fourth as Miguel Velazquez walked with one out before Chris McGuiness doubled to put runners on second and third. However, Nicholson induced Mike Bianucci to line out softly to second base while Cody Podraza flied out to center ending the inning.
After Nicholson tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, the Blaze finally broke through in the sixth. With one out, Erik Morrison singled before Velazquez singled and McGuiness was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nicholson recovered to strikeout Bianucci, but then uncorked a wild pitch allowing Morrison to score Bakersfield's first run of the night. Nicholson did then strikeout Podraza on a 3-2 pitch stranding the potential tying runs in scoring position.
The Giants took a 4-1 lead in the top of the seventh as Weeks clubbed a two-out double off the fence in center and scored when the next batter, Peguero, grounded a single into left.
Anderson (2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) relieved Nicholson to begin the bottom of the seventh and walked Tommy Mendonca with one out before James doubled to deep left putting runners on second and third. David Paisano was up next and he grounded out to shortstop plating Mendonca to make it 4-2. Anderson then struck out Morrison to end the inning before tossing a perfect bottom of the eighth.
Stoffel struck out Podraza and DiFazio to begin the bottom of the ninth and then induced Mendonca to groundout to shortstop ending the game.
Bakersfield starter Danny Gutierrez (0-1) suffered the loss after yielding three runs (one earned) on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three.
