Mavs earn 8-5 win Friday night
August 21, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
Trailing 4-1 in the eighth with just one hit since the first inning, the Mavs were in deep trouble in Rancho Cucamonga. However in one the biggest comebacks of the season, the Mavs busted out for seven runs in the inning, en route to a 8-5 win Friday night at the Epicenter.
After a groundout started the inning, the next three men reached to load the bases. The Quakes turned to closer Eddie McKiernan to get out of the jam.
On McKiernan's first pitch, Edilio Colina singled up the middle to score two and pull the Mavs within 4-3. Johermyn Chavez followed with an RBI single to tie it.
After an intentional walk to Rich Poythress, McKiernan (3-2) struck out Ji-Man Choi. Down in the count 1-2, Kuo Hui Lo ripped a two-run double to give the Mavs the lead.
Shaver Hansen followed with a two-run single on the very next pitch to make it 8-4.
The Quakes loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Jon Towsend lined out to end the inning. They would score once in the ninth to end Brian Moran's scoreless streak at 21 innings, but it wasn't nearly enough.
The Mavs took the early lead with a Chavez RBI single in the first. They would register just one hit over the next six innings. Before the rally began, 11 straight Maverick hitters had been retired and 20 of the last 21 failed to reach base safely.
Angel Castillo tied the game in the fourth with a solo home run. He would belt another one in the sixth to put the Quakes ahead 2-1.
Two more runs followed in the inning on RBI singles by Dillon Baird and Kevin Ramos.
The Mavs were forced to piece nine innings together with the bullpen, as Jimmy Gillheeey was a late scratch. Bobby LaFromboise went the first four, allowing just one run. Cheyne Hann (3-5) picked up the win, with 1.1 scoreless innings.
After taking three of four from the Quakes, the Mavs are now even with them in the overall standings and remain a game out of first place. They'll face Lancaster on Four-D College Football Night Saturday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
